Access to Education for Children and Young People with Medical Needs

INTRODUCTION

The LEA is required, through section 19 of the Education Act 1996, and DfES Guidance 0732/2001, to set out its arrangements for meeting the educational needs of children and young people who are unable to attend school because of medical needs; both those who are physically ill or injured and those with mental health problems.

PHILOSOPHY

The LEA:

Values all children equally, regardless of their abilities, disabilities, ill health needs or ethnic origin.
Seeks to minimise, as far as possible, the disruption to normal schooling.
Recognises that those pupils whose needs cannot be met in mainstream school, because of medical needs and/or the requirement for additional support in order to enable them to maximise their educational potential.
Is committed to working in partnership with parents *, schools and other agencies to support pupils effectively.
