AccesEdChildMedNdsINTRO00

INTRODUCTION

The LEA is required, through section 19 of the Education Act 1996, and DfES Guidance 0732/2001, to set out its arrangements for meeting the educational needs of children and young people who are unable to attend school because of medical needs; both those who are physically ill or injured and those with mental health problems.

PHILOSOPHY

The LEA:
  • Values all children equally, regardless of their abilities, disabilities, ill health needs or ethnic origin.
  • Seeks to minimise, as far as possible, the disruption to normal schooling.
  • Recognises that those pupils whose needs cannot be met in mainstream school, because of medical needs and/or the requirement for additional support in order to enable them to maximise their educational potential.
  • Is committed to working in partnership with parents *, schools and other agencies to support pupils effectively.
