Schools Walk the Wight

Schools Walk the Wight was started in 2006 to link everyday walking activities to the 26 miles of the Walk the Wight event, run by and in aid of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, and supported by the Isle of Wight NHS Primary Care Trust and the Isle of Wight Council.

Children accumulate the 26 miles throughout the school year by walking to school, walking activities at school, and walking with family and friends during leisure time.

Schools appoint a coordinator and are provided with maps, stickers and forms by the Earl Mountbatten Hospice. Having achieved 26 miles, children are rewarded by a T shirt, certificate and medal provided by the Hospice, and in turn raise funds which go to support the Hospice’s valuable work in the community.

As an added extra, children can also walk (accompanied) the 4 miles from Freshwater Bay to Alum Bay on the day of the Walk the Wight event in May. Full details of this are available from the Hospice.

Since the launch in 2006, when £15,500 was raised by children alone, the event has gone from strength to strength. In 2007 over £22,000 was raised, and in 2008 over £35,500 with over 2000 children participating. The Hospice is aiming for 100% participation from all schools!

Children of all ages are learning that, by looking after themselves and getting more active, they are also looking after their environment, and the wider local community. And that their everyday activity, which may appear to be small, can have a big impact.
Schools can organise events to suit their location and type; some schools promote the walk to school, others provide lunchtime circuit events, or family walks at weekends. For ideas on how to promote walking activities contact Louise Gray from the Health Promotion team on 814281 or Helen Stichbury, Sustainable School Travel on 823099 x 5735.

Alternatively contact Summerfields Primary on 525085 who have produced a booklet full of ideas, showing how they promote Schools Walk the Wight at their school.

The important thing is for every school to appoint a coordinator and then speak to Karen Eeles in the Earl Mountbatten Hospice Fundraising Team on 528989, or email Karen.eeles@emhfunding.com.
