CYCLING AND SCOOTERING TO SCHOOLCycling (and scootering) is by far the most popular transport choice with pupils; generally, around 30% of pupils of all ages would rather cycle to school than travel by any other means (source: School Travel Plans 2005-2008).
Schools should develop their own cycling policy and a suggested format is available here:- Cycle trainingThe old ‘cycling proficiency’ has been replaced by a range of cycle skills, playground and on-road cycle training, appropriate to the skills and requirements of pupils. Some schools have members of staff trained to deliver cycle training as part of PE lessons, where others have after-school skills clubs, and cycle clubs open to all ages are being established throughout the Island. The Isle of Wight is leading the way nationally with over 4000 children having access to approved cycle training during 2007/08 through the ‘Go Ride’ and ‘Bikeability’ schemes. For details of what’s available please contact your school or the Road Safety Unit on 823777. Schools can contact the Sports Partnerships for details of cycle training schemes for teachers, TAs and non-teaching staff. Training is also available for adults, including those who wish to cycle with their children. Please contact the Road Safety Unit on 823777 or see the website www.iwight.com/roadsafety. |
