ANNUAL REVIEW AND AWARDS

Having completed all the work involved in producing a travel plan document, schools can perhaps justifiably feel that they’ve done quite enough! But it would all have been worthless if the targets in the travel plan are not pursued, and one way of keeping the whole project alive is to undertake annual review. The School Travel Plan Advisor is available to help throughout the school year, and at every stage of the review process.

Annual Review

Within one month of the Annual Review date a report should be supplied to the School Travel Plan Advisor. It is the responsibility of the head and governors to ensure it is submitted on time, and should be completed by the travel plan coordinator with the involvement of pupils. As a minimum it should include:-
  • Hands-up survey of how pupil and staff travel to school site
  • Progress against Baseline data and targets (your successes, and a brief explanation if things haven’t gone according to plan)
  • Review of Targets and Timetable in the context of where the school wants to be
  • New Timetable for forthcoming year(s)
  • Details of how the travel plan grant has been/will be used

This review should particularly include any changes in the numbers or type of people travelling to site, for instance if a new pre- of after-schools provision is made on site, or if there is a change in the age-group or numbers of pupils travelling to site.

Evidence should be collected during the school year to demonstrate how the school has:-
  • Participated in pedestrian promotion (eg. Schools Walk the Wight, sponsored walks etc.)
  • Supported cycle training (eg. Participated in Go Ride training schemes)
  • Promoted Park and Stride, if appropriate
  • Used public transport for whole school trips, where appropriate
  • Participated in road safety training (eg. Randini Roadshow, council’s Road Safety team events)
  • Participation in events to increase active or sustainable travel (eg. Madcap, Junior Citizen, Heads-On, Travelsafe, Bus/Rail Roadshow, Anti-Bullying, Considerate Driving, etc.)
  • Promoted sustainable travel (eg. Newsletters, notice boards, website, parent are evenings, etc.)
  • Provided curricular opportunities for travel plan project (eg. Survey analysis, posters, etc.)
  • Involved the whole school community (eg. Police & PCSOs, Healthy Schools coordinator, PE coordinator, Eco-Schools, Sustainable Schools, etc.)

The simplest way to do this would be to keep a box or file with photos, examples of work, cuttings from newspapers, etc.

Awards

All schools submitting an Annual Review to the School Travel Plan Advisor will achieve a certificate in recognition of their ongoing commitment to the project:-
One star = 1 year old travel plan
Double star = 2 year old travel plan
Triple star = 3 year old travel plan

From 2009, schools can be entered for Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of accreditation. Completion of Annual Review as outlined above will almost certainly lead to Bronze accreditation. For Silver and Gold awards, the school must demonstrate an ongoing commitment throughout the school year, and a modal shift away from car use, so it will be even more important to collect evidence of what the school is doing throughout the year. Full details are available from the School Travel Plan Advisor.
