For more details contact the School Travel Plan Advisor on 823777, email Helen.Stichbury@iow.gov.uk

CONGRATULATIONS to the first schools to complete Travel Plans on the Isle of Wight, Solent Middle School and Shalfleet CE Primary

Two very different schools, facing their own unique issues, have put together plans which will reduce car use on the school run.

Although Solent Middle School have strong links to cycling, their baseline survey showed that over 30% of pupils currently come to school by car but would like to cycle.

Parents cited concerns over traffic as a significant factor in not allowing their children to cycle, along with the lack of storage for helmets etc. at school.

Solent are working with the council’s Cycling Promotion Officer to look at ways of extending the cycle way from Cowes to the school, and will be using their grant to provide lockers for pupils. Raising awareness goes further than merely doing a survey; Mrs. Sally Evensen, teacher and member of the school’s Travel Plan Working Party, has produced a Scheme of Work which she is happy to share with teaching professionals on the Island.

In contrast Shalfleet CE is a popular primary school but it’s location almost a mile away from the village, plus drawing from a wide catchment area, means that walking and cycling are just not practical options.

So the school have set up a carshare scheme, negotiated with the local pub for an alternative car parking facility, supported the parish council’s bid for an extension of the Coastal Footpath, and are hoping to set up a school bus.

Already there has been a reduction in car congestion outside the school, where the raising of awareness of travel issues to the whole school community, and their commitment to do something, have been key to improving the situation

The Isle of Wight Council is committed to helping every school have a travel plan. If you want to be the next success story, contact the School Travel Plan Advisor on 823777 or email Helen.Stichbury@iow.gov.uk
