Questionnaires

There are many questionnaires available but any that are done must ask pupils the following questions:-

How do you usually travel to and from school?
How would you like to travel to and from school?

Pupils should also be asked what would encourage or support them in walking, cycling or public transport use. You could use this worksheet, which can be amended to suit your particular school:-

It may be more appropriate to use your school council, Eco-Schools council, or another group of interested students. What has worked well at some schools is to map where pupils feel there are areas of concern, which provides useful research and data. In turn, this can go forward to, say, Engineering Services for the maintenance of a footpath, or proposals for a new cycle route. If you would like maps for this purpose, please contact the School Travel Plan Advisor.

Staff

Staff are often keen to support health and environmental measures in theory, but sometimes struggle in practice to balance these aims with the demands of working hours, meetings and physical loads. Nevertheless, staff have a huge role to play in setting models of behaviour and, if there is a will, there will often be a way.

Suggestions for staff to look at include:-

  • Several people to park away in one colleague’s drive, walking or cycling in to work from there
  • Park away from site and walk a shorter distance to work
  • Electric bikes – possible funding assistance available through IWC BOOOST from time to time
  • Public transport use
  • Holding a ‘Car Free’ day even just one a year, maybe linked to Eco-Schools, Healthy Schools or Sustainable Schools work

Remember, even leaving the car away from school once a week will reduce car use by 20%.

Staff should be surveyed and the following form can be downloaded and amended to suit:-

Parents

Parents of primary-aged children have a vital role to play in how the child gets to school. A suggested survey for parents is available for download here:-

QUESTIONNAIRES0800

Older children will increasingly be travelling independently, or on arranged transport. Parents support for active and sustainable travel is still vital and key, but schools may wish to consider how best to elicit parents’ views. For instance, it may be more appropriate to ask parents for their suggestions for reducing car use for environmental and health reasons.
