Framework for Professional Development – Support Staff

This School Support Staff Framework for Professional Development was developed as a direct response to the needs of schools for clarity in training and development of support staff and as a tool for their performance management.

The recommendations of the National Joint Council re-grading system for support staff were used as a structure for the building of skills, experience, knowledge and understanding, with consideration being given to progression from level 1 to level 4. It was further acknowledged that the document, when completed by a member of support staff, could be used as a portfolio of evidence for future use.

The work was undertaken by a group of committed teachers, teaching assistants and head teachers from all sectors, including special schools, and the Framework has been trialled successfully in a range of settings. The intended audience for the document is line managers of support staff in schools, though support staff themselves will be more closely involved in the completion of the Framework pro-formas.

At the outset the Framework was designed solely for teaching assistants but it soon became clear that it was needed for all support staff. As a result further exemplar material from a range of support staff roles will be added when available. This is a working document and, as such, will be reviewed, revised and added to as developments unfold. Please contact Lynne Brown, School Workforce Development Adviser (email lynne.brown@iow.gov.uk or tel: 529790) if you have any comments or suggestions.
