‘A LEADERSHIP JOURNEY’ - ISLE OF WIGHT MIDDLE LEADERS’ DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
MAN/EC/01

This programme combines the Isle of Wight Middle Leaders programme with the National College of School Leadership (NCSL) Leading from the Middle (LftM).

Target Group: Well motivated and enthusiastic heads of department, pastoral, key stage and curriculum leaders in all schools and teachers demonstrating leadership potential

The nomination of middle leaders to this programme should be influenced by the School Improvement Plan and the Continuing Professional Development policy of the school.

The purpose of this programme is to further develop and enhance the leadership skills of participants and is supported by the LftM programme whose aims are:
  • to enhance middle leaders’ confidence and competence as school leaders...
...by identifying and developing further their leadership and management skills...
...in order that they can become more effective leaders of their teams and enhance their ability to contribute towards raising standards in school.

This programme should be seen as part of a whole school strategy to develop the leadership of the school.

Format:
The programme will start and finish with a residential facilitated by leading external trainers and will include three face to face Development Days as well as a number of twilight sessions.

Skills and processes:
  • Focused development work in groups
  • Sharing ideas/expertise
  • Complementary online tasks to do in between face-to-face sessions

Leadership coach to support learning Identification and development of a school-based activity

Online Materials:
  • ‘Learn to Lead’ materials: 195 screens, 65 activities, external web links for deeper study based on National Standards ‘plus’, three online tools – team audit, mind-mapping, change tool
  • Virtual School
  • Middle Ground Community with Regional Tutor Groups

School Improvement Modules:

These will focus on the role of the middle leader in:
  • Using Data Effectively
  • Assessment for Learning
  • School Self Evaluation

Leading from the Middle challenges and supports participants to become self-directed learners using a combination of different interventions and technologies which improve outcomes and involve learners in taking responsibility for their own development.

Participating schools will be required to sign up to all the aspects of the programme.

Participants must:
  • be committed to attending the whole course including the residential elements;
  • be nominated and endorsed by their headteacher;
  • be provided with good mentoring within their school;
  • identify and develop a school-based activity which supports the SIP;
  • be prepared to challenge and be challenged in an appropriate manner.

The headteacher must:
  • provide good mentoring in the school;
  • support the development of the school-based activity;
  • give time for leadership coach sessions;
  • monitor progress of the participant in all aspects of the programme.

Application and Selection Process:
Applicants should complete the usual Training and Development Application Form in addition to the specific programme application form. The latter is key to the selection process and should contain a statement from the headteacher that endorses the application.

Costings:
£630 + supply + travel (This course is supported by the LEA and the National College of School Leadership) £150 for the Isle of Wight element and £480 for the NCSL element schools will receive separate invoices for this in the Autumn Term. If a teacher withdraws once they have been registered the school will be charged £480 by the National College.

Schools with <100 pupils will only pay £150 as the NCSL pays all costs for the LftM element of the programme – however the above cancellation policy applies.
