COVER SUPERVISORS’ TRAINING SHS/EC Target Group: Cover Supervisors in High Schools. This is a 5 day course and a breakdown of each day is listed below. Thursday 4 September 2008 SESSION ONE: Remit of the post of cover supervisor. Objective: to clarify and explore the expectations and boundaries of the role. Areas covered: job specifications, union guidance, boundaries with Teaching Standards. SESSION TWO: How to start a lesson. Steve Hoyle Objective: to learn communication techniques. Areas covered: how to establish order, boundaries and routines.. SESSION THREE: National Curriculum. Objective: to communicate essential detail about content and levels. Areas covered: core subjects, foundation subjects, coursework, assessment Tasks for 5 September: a) to observe 2 lessons b) to research the school timetable to find out i) about the year 9 curriculum ii) what choices pupils have in year 10. Monday 8 September 2008 SESSION FOUR: Strategies for a purposeful lesson without lesson content. Objective: to explore a range of activities to be used in class if work is not set. Areas covered: background resources SESSION FIVE: Creating a favourable learning environment. Objective: to communicate best practice. Areas covered: expectations, preparation for the taking of the class SESSION SIX: When things go wrong. SH Objectives: to explore why things go wrong, to look at best practice for regaining control. Areas covered: pupil expectations, common pitfalls, strategies for managing behaviour. Tuesday 6 January 2009 SESSION 7: What makes a good lesson? SH Objective: to enable participants to judge the success of a lesson they cover. Areas covered: judging learning, judging progress. SESSION 8: Every Child Matters. Objective: to communicate the rationale and working of the ECM agenda in schools. Areas covered: linking of education, social services and medical services for the benefit of children; what ECM means in school. SESSION 9: Special Needs. Objective: to communicate the philosophy of SEN and how it works in schools. Areas covered: School Action, Action Plus, Statements, Individual Education Plans. Tasks for 7 January: a) to observe 2 lessons b) to speak to the school’s SENCO to find out how SEN is structured and managed. Thursday 8 January 2009 SESSION 10: Assessment for Learning. SH Objective: to communicate the theory behind AFL and how it contributes to a purposeful lesson. Areas covered: questioning, recapping, modelling. SESSION 11: Protecting yourself. Objective: to communicate principles of health and safety in the classroom; to communicate best practice in how to avoid allegations from pupils. Areas covered: risk assessment, professional behaviour. SESSION 12: Progression in your career. Objective: to communicate routes into higher education, teaching and other careers in education. Areas covered: qualification routes, GTP, PGCE. Tasks for July conference: a) Report on a good lesson you have done; production of a resource pack. Date to be arranged for July 2009 SESSION 13: A positive approach to behaviour. Objective: to show the importance of positive messages to pupils Areas covered: theories of learning SESSIONS 14 and 15: Delegates’ contributions (and from experienced cover supervisors)
