Aims of the Group:
  • To communicate local, regional and national language developments to colleagues.
  • To promote and steer language learning and events on the Island.

Minutes of Meetings:

2007/08 Activities:
  • Language Deliver in Primary Schools – co-ordination and support of staff and students to deliver languages and support language teachers in over 15 Primary schools.
  • Primary Language Days – at various Primary Schools (dates TBC).
  • Regional Support Group in Early Language Learning – to provide free support and training to all those interested in Primary languages (5 twilights a year).
  • Regional Consultative Group in Early Language Learning – meetings to promote and steer Primary languages (3 Island meetings, various regional meetings and 1 national meeting annually).
  • The European Theatre Company – to facilitate a return visit.
  • Integrating ICT in the MFL Classroom – a Specialist Schools and Academies Trust event organised by Lead Practitioner, Joe Dale, on Saturday 13 October 2007.
  • Languages Christmas Card Competition – the third year. Deadline will be Friday 3 December 2007 and the theme will be ‘environmentally friendly transport’.
  • Strategic Learning Network – the creation of at least 1 network involving 5 schools to focus on AfL with Year 8.

2006/07 Activities:
  • Language Delivery in Primary Schools – co-ordination and support of staff and students to deliver languages and support language teachers in over 15 Primary schools.
  • Primary Language Days – held at Cowes Primary, Godshill Primary and Whippingham Primary.
  • Regional Support Group in Early Language Learning – to provide free support and training to all those interested in Primary languages (5 twilights a year).
  • Steering/Professional Learning Group – promoting and steering language learning and events on the Island.
  • Regional Consultative Group in Early Language Learning – meetings to promote and steer Primary languages (3 Island meetings, various regional meetings and 1 national meeting annually).
  • Christmas Card Competition – the second year and nearly 1,000 entries including a Primary school from Malta.
  • The European Theatre Company – performed ‘La Cirque Magique’ at 4 venues (Ryde High, Downside Middle, Sandham Middle and Osborne Middle) to Years 4-6 on 8 and 9 March 2007 (see page 5 of Primary Strategy Bulletin).
  • Portsmouth University Deliver French to Island Staff – to provide weekly French language learning to all staff interested in delivering Primary languages.
  • Integrating ICT in the MFL Classroom – a Specialist Schools and Academies Trust event organised by Lead Practitioner, Joe Dale, in October 2006.
  • Teacher Visit – to the Ashcombe School (Specialist Language College) – February 2006.
  • ‘Association of Teachers and Lecturers’ Conference 2007 – Peter Shreeve contributes to the debate over languages and primary languages in particular at the Easter conference of the ‘Association of Teachers and Lecturers’.
  • Ringing the Changes – Languages Conference with Dr. Lid King, National Director of Languages, Helen Myers, President Elect of the Association for Language Learning and Jennie Clarke, AST and Primary Outreach Teacher.

Previous Years’ Activities:
  • Language Delivery in Primary Schools – co-ordination of staff and students to deliver languages and support language teachers in 5 Primary schools.
  • Language Days – held at Summerfields Primary School and Medina High School.
  • SEAGUL – student and staff attendance at the ‘South East Able & Gifted Unlimited’ 24 hour French experience.
  • Able Linguist Days – Portsmouth University event to raise the profile of languages in local schools (see Cowes students on first page of University presentation).
  • Christmas Card Competition.
  • Staff Support and Advice – given on ‘schemes of work’, task variety and other aspects of language teaching and learning topics to school governors, teachers and support staff.
  • Steering Group – promoting and steering language learning and events on the Island.
