Aims of the Group: - This group of active practitioners all share a desire to improve the provision for the Island’s gifted and talented pupils. The group’s work is centred around the sharing of ideas, arranging enrichment activities and keeping co-ordinators/leading teachers up-to-date with current policy.
Minutes of Meetings: 2007/08 Activities: - Leading Teacher Training on 19 September and 14 November 2007.
- Governor Gifted and Talented Training, Challenging Able Writers with Paul Cookson, at Quay Arts Centre on 11 October 2007.
- Dr Barry Hymer at Quay Arts Centre on 31 January 2008.
- Forum for Gifted and Talented Co-ordinators on 6 March and 26 June 2008 at The Education Centre.
- Newly Qualified Teachers Training on 1 May 2008 at The Education Centre.
2006/07 Activities: - Big Bug Primary and Middle School Workshops with Martin Rapley.
- Forensic Science Workshops (ALC and Saturday Club for Middle and Primary School pupils).
- Enigma Code Breaking Workshop with Cambridge University for Middle School pupils.
- Performing Arts Easter Schools (Key Stage 3) with Red Tie Theatre Company.
- Big Art Weekend (Key Stage 3) show in the Learning Curve Gallery, Quay Arts Centre, in August/September.
- Forum Meetings for Able, Gifted and Talented Co-ordinators.
- Display in County Hall of Steering Group activities
- Training in Gifted and Talented for Island Newly Qualified Teachers.
Previous Years’ Activities: - Big Foot Key stage 3 Summer Schools for Performing Arts.
- Advanced Learning Centre (Key Stage 2) pilot in English, Maths and Science – the pilot ran for 10 weeks from October 2005 – November 2006.
- Big Arts Weekend (Key Stage 3) with end of workshop show at the Quay Arts Cente.
- Saturday Clubs for Primary pupils – art rocks, dig dinosaurs, animate IT.
- Forum for Able, Gifted and Talented Co-ordinators.
Local, Regional and National Events: - The Isle of Wight Steering Group is represented at the half termly meetings of SEAGUL group.
