Assistance for Disabled Students

If you are studying on a Higher Education course and have a disability or specific learning difficulty you may be able to get extra funding through the Disabled Student Allowances (DSAs).

DSA will help to cover extra costs or expenses that you incur as a result of your disability. These allowances are not intended to assist with disability related expenditure which you would incur even if you were not following your course.

The allowances are made in three categories as follows:

Specialist Equipment Allowance- up to a maximum of £4680 (2005/6 rate) for the whole of the course. Intended for major items of equipment.

Non Medical Helpers Allowance- up to a maximum of £11840 per year. To help pay for assistance e.g. note taker.

General Expenditure- up to a maximum of £1565 per year. To cover any related costs such as books, tapes and Braille paper. It can also be used to top up the other two allowances if necessary.

How to Apply

1. Establish your disability:
  • we will require details of your disability, with the appropriate medical evidence.
  • for dyslexia we will require a recent psychologists report carried out since the age of 16.
Please note: Your LEA is unable to meet the costs of establishing a disability.

2. Needs Assessment:
  • once a disability has been established the Authority will agree for you to have an assessment.
  • the assessment fee will be paid for by the Authority.
  • the assessment is carried out by either a trained disability adviser at your University or through a Registered Assessment Centre.

To obtain a fact sheet, DFES booklet called 'Bridging the Gap' or further information on Disabled Student Allowances please do not hesitate to contact the Student Support section from  April onwards.
