Junior Rock Challenge – Portsmouth May 2005

Island schools swept the board at the first-ever national Junior Rock Challenge held at Portsmouth Guildhall last week, with four out of the top five awards.

Overall winner was Barton Primary School.

Overall winner, Barton Primary School were amongst those recognised for their achievements in the dance, drama and design spectacular which aims to demonstrate to youngsters that they can have fun and lead healthy lifestyles without alcohol, cigarettes and drugs.

The event was the first time 8-11 year olds had been able to take part in the global drug and crime prevention initiative, which originated in Australia. Barton Primary School, with some of the youngest children taking part, were awarded top prize for their outstanding, “sensitive” and “intelligent” dance performance entitled ‘Cruel Sea’ - based around the recent tsunami disaster. The children, who were also given an award for Best Hair & Make up, had spent the last two months rehearsing, producing scenery and costumes and arranging their own soundtrack to the performance. Much of this preparation was undertaken within school hours and linked to all areas of the curriculum, from history and geography to PE. Crucial funding for the project was provided by the Pan Neighbourhood Partnership.

As part of its award, the school received £250 and is now involving its pupils in deciding how that money is spent. It is thought likely that it will be put towards future dance, drama or music projects.

Other awards on the night went to Whippingham Primary and Osborne Middle Schools (2nd place and Best Drama Skills), The Island Catholic Partnership (ABK Middle, St Thomas of Canterbury and St Mary’s – 3rd place and Best Costume Design) and Downside Middle School (5th place and Most Entertaining Performance).

Karin Wales, Headteacher at Barton Primary School said, “We were absolutely delighted to win this national award. The children really put their heart and soul into the performance and we are so proud of them. They were all deeply touched by the catastrophic impact of the tsunami and their performance was extremely moving for all the parents, teachers and indeed other children taking part on the night. We are very grateful to all of the staff, parents and children who have supported this project and the award will take pride of place in our school.”
