TACKLING THE PROBLEM: NO SECRETS! BULLYING BEHAVIOUR IS UNACCEPTABLE AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED What your child can do:
- Avoid being alone
- Walk with confidence
- Walk away – ignore
- Tell someone
- Be assertive – say “no”
What the school can do:
- Use the school’s Peer Support system
- Offer immediate opportunities to talk with a trusted adult
- Inform parents/carers
- Offer continuing support
- Take disciplinary steps to prevent more bullying occurring
- Offer support with assertiveness skills
What parents can do:
- Take an active role in your child’s education
- LISTEN
- Ask questions about your child’s day/friends/activities
- Invite other children over to help your child to make appropriate friends
- Check your child is not ‘inviting’ any bullying behaviour
- Reassure your child that the problem can be sorted out
- Contact the school
Helping the bullying child:
- Talk about why they became involved in bullying behaviour
- Discuss alternative ways of behaving in difficult situations
