Tackling Bullying

TACKLING THE PROBLEM:
NO SECRETS!
BULLYING BEHAVIOUR IS UNACCEPTABLE AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED

What your child can do:

  • Avoid being alone
  • Walk with confidence
  • Walk away – ignore
  • Tell someone
  • Be assertive – say “no”

What the school can do:

  • Use the school’s Peer Support system
  • Offer immediate opportunities to talk with a trusted adult
  • Inform parents/carers
  • Offer continuing support
  • Take disciplinary steps to prevent more bullying occurring
  • Offer support with assertiveness skills

What parents can do:

  • Take an active role in your child’s education
  • LISTEN
  • Ask questions about your child’s day/friends/activities
  • Invite other children over to help your child to make appropriate friends
  • Check your child is not ‘inviting’ any bullying behaviour
  • Reassure your child that the problem can be sorted out
  • Contact the school

Helping the bullying child:

  • Talk about why they became involved in bullying behaviour
  • Discuss alternative ways of behaving in difficult situations
