Tackling Bullying

Anti-Bullying Information for Parents.

All children experience friendship difficulties – they ‘fall out’ with friends, they discover people who they do not like or get on with. Part of the growing up process involves developing the skills to deal with these normal ‘rough & tumbles’. Children with adult support find strategies for managing, such as: ignoring, walking away, seeking alternatives. It is only when unpleasant behaviour is directed at them persistently, hurtfully and intentionally that we say bullying is happening.

WHAT IS BULLYING?

There are many definitions of bullying, but most have three things in common:

  • It is deliberately hurtful behaviour
  • It is repeated often over a period of time
  • It is difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves
  • Bullying can take many forms, including

PHYSICAL - hitting, kicking, taking belongings
VERBAL – name calling, insulting, making offensive remarks
INDIRECT – spreading nasty stories

What to do First?

  1. Tell your child’s form tutor.
If you still have concerns

  1. The next level of involvement would be your child’s Year Head with appropriate support teams such as Behaviour Support Staff, Family Support Team or Emotional Literacy Coordinator.
If the problem persists

  1. Speak with the Head Teacher.
If you still have concerns

  1. The school’s governors can be contacted. Put your concerns in writing and mark private and confidential to the Chair of Governors at the school address.
