Terms used in the bookletsAdmissions number The maximum number of children a school can give places to each year. Aided school A school owned by trustees and mostly maintained by the LA. (The school governing body controls admissions and religious education). CAF The common application form which all parents must complete. Community school A school which the LEA owns, funds and maintains. Controlled school A school owned by trustees, but the LA maintains it and controls admissions. Religious education follows the LA’s agreed syllabus. Independent school A school which the LA does not fund or maintain – a privately owned school. Option Zone A geographical area served by more than one school. Parents Parents, guardians and others who have actual care of a child. Priority area The geographical area that a school serves. The priority area you live in depends on your postcode and house number. Sibling A younger brother or sister (including a half-brother, half-sister, step-brother or step-sister), or any child who lives in the home as part of the family.
