SACRE Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education Every Local Education Authority (LEA) is required by law to have a SACRE. It's origins go back to the Education Act of 1944, but the Education Reform Act 1988 and the Education Act 1996 strengthened its place in an LEA. The responsibilities of SACRE are: SACRE’s Role
| | is responsible for advising the Local Authority in matters concerning the teaching of Religious Education and Collective Acts of Worship. It also has a monitoring role in this subject. |

| | decides on applications for determinations of cases in which requirements for Christian collective worship is not to apply. (Never been called upon to do so on the Island.) |

| | can require the L.E.A. to review its Agreed Syllabus. |

| | is required to publish an Annual Report of its work | SACRE consists of four groups. Committee A 6 members representing Religious Denominations, which reflect principal traditions on the Isle of Wight, other than the Church of England. 2 Persons representing the Roman Catholic faith, 3 members representing the Free Churches (nominated by Island Church Leaders Forum) and 1 representative of other faiths nominated by Vectis Equality Project
Committee B 4 members representing the Church of England nominated by the Portsmouth Diocesan Board of Education
Committee C 5 members representing Isle of Wight teachers nominated by the Isle of Wight Teachers’ Council. One teacher from each sector; Primary, Middle, High and Special schools and one Headteacher.
Committee D 4 members representing the Local Authority. 2 elected members and 2 nominated by the Director of Education. Members of SACRE are representatives and not delegates. They bring to SACRE their own views based on their own skills, background and experiences. It is expected that representatives will report back, at least annually, to the group they represent. Each group will review membership on a four-yearly cycle. Travel expenses are available.
High schools will be asked to nominate 2 representatives from their sixth forms to attend and contribute. The students will not have voting rights. They will serve for a two year period.
