Encouraging Learners to be Global Citizens |  | A good global citizen will: - Have an open mind

- Have respect for other communities and cultures
- Be interested in learning about other people and cultures
- Use a teamwork approach and be able to communicate
- Show resourcefulness, creativity and confidence
A good global citizen will understand: - That they are global as well as local and national citizens
- That they have rights and responsibilities as global citizens
- The values and characteristics that define their own culture
- The need to understand the similarities and differences that exist with other cultures
- The aspirations that they and people from other cultures have for the future
- The opportunities that exist to communicate with people in other cultures
- The skills, knowledge and experience that they can learn and acquire in developing as global citizens
What should you do to develop good global citizens? Enable learners to: - Make links between personal, local, national and global issues and events
- Take part in sustainable global partnerships, e.g. through eTwinning and visits
- Think about their own values and attitudes and appreciate the similarities and differences to those of other cultures so that they value the differences
- Have a global approach to major world issues such as poverty, interdependence, human rights, sustainable development, injustice, prejudice and discrimination
- Explore with others probable and preferable futures and how the latter may be achieved
- Be enterprising in sharing their own experiences with others from different cultures
- Be outward-looking in their approach to life and work, taking account of the global dimension in thought and action
