What is a Healthy School?
According to the NHSS Guidance document a Healthy School is one where: | | - Health issues are seen as contributing to school improvement
- Healthy Schools activities are identified in the School Development Plan
- The Head teacher and governors support the task group
- All staff have training in PSHE and Citizenship
- Policies are in line with statutory and non statutory guidance
- The whole school community is involved in policy making
- The roles of the whole school community are clearly defined in policies
- Schemes of work include clear learning outcomes
- A range of resources is used
- There is a code of practice for working with outside agencies
- There are links with other areas of the curriculum
- There are a range of teaching styles used
- Peer support for learning is encouraged
- The importance of a safe and supporting teaching environment is recognised
- Pupils are encouraged to consider levels of risk and make informed judgements about their actions
- Healthy Schools activities are set out in the school prospectus
- The school supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development
- Staff and pupils develop and maintain a positive school culture
- There is a secure, well lit, welcoming environment
- The school has a smoking policy and litter is kept to a minimum
- Pupils’ needs inform curriculum planning
- Pupils’ views influence teaching and learning in PSHE and Citizenship
- Pupils take on responsibility
- Pupils are involved in policy development – school councils etc
- Pupils’ health is supported
- Internal there is pupil support
- Information on local services is given
- Staff are consulted on and supported in training
- A range of professional development opportunities are available
- There is non-contact time for Healthy Schools
- Staff can share information etc with other schools
