Policy to support personalised learning for gifted and talented children and young peopleThe Isle of Wight Local Authority (LA) has adopted the DCSF definition of gifted and talented learners as those children who are achieving, or who have the potential to achieve, at a level substantially beyond the rest of their peer group. “Gifted” describes pupils who have the ability to excel in academic subjects such as mathematics and English. “Talented” describes those who have the ability to excel in practical and creative skills such as sport, music and art. There are gifted and talented learners in every year group in every school. The DCSF assume that around 10% of every school population should be identified as gifted and/or talented. Whilst schools are free to determine the size of their gifted and talented population, they should be able to justify this in terms of the provision made for the identified group and subsequent improvements in standards.
