Gymnastics Scheme of Work - Yr 2 - Unit 9 |
These lesson plans have been written by Godshill Primary School.Learning Focus of unit:Basic actions: Travel – towards, along, over, off Jump and land – shape Rolling - shape Balance developing stillness– patches & points Linking actions with some control – simple sequence building Teaching points can be found on TOPGYM cards, also in West Sussex gymnastic guidelines and in IOW Gymnastic Guide YR-4. For inclusion of special needs or extension activities please refer to relevant TOPGYM cards . Lesson 1Floorwork only. Warm-up: Travel using small steps & giant steps. Different directions with control, use space safely. Revise 5 basic jumps, stress squashy knees, ankles. (TOPGYM jumping cards). Travel using a combination of 2 different jumps. Change, change again. HRE: How does your body feel? What changes do you notice? Ready to work harder? Main Activity: Develop traveling on hands and feet into spaces, different directions. Teach and improve variety of walks (ref TOPGYM traveling cards) Monkey walk, crab walk, bunny hops, frog hops, introduce caterpillar walk. Build a short sequence as a gymnastic sentence – Capital letter to start (Pin balance) words that link together to make sense (2 smooth actions – jump and travel on hands & feet) full stop to end (pin balance). Cool down: stretch & relax muscles, Autumn Hedgehog Hibernation. Curled in ball, one limb at a time extended stretch to fingertips/toes. Curl back into a ball to relax. Teach uncurl to standing – sit back on heels, one foot forward, bent knee, push down on knee to come up to standing Lesson 2:Floorwork only. Warm up: Travel on feet – 5 jumps, use a combination of 2 jumps. Travel on hands and feet – recap from lesson 1 – control using muscles. HRE: How are you breathing? Are your hands and feet warmer? Main Activity: Balance – develop stillness. Use TOPGYM balance cards – enlarge for pupil copies Teaching points to improve –stretch the limbs, point toes & fingertips, lift chin etc. Explore pupils’ own range then teach PATCH and POINTS differences. Focus on PATCH – hold still for count of 3 – then extend to 5. Demonstrations of effective balancing techniques. Gymnastic Sentences – Remind Capital letter to start, linking actions (words in right order make sense) and full stop to end. Build a simple sequence : Pin balance start into a jump into traveling on hands & feet, into patch balance STILL as full stop. Split class, half observe, half perform. Evaluate – good points, stretching to hold still balance, controlled jump – take off & land. How to improve. Swap over. Cool Down: Autumn Hedgehogs Hibernation. Lesson 3:Use low apparatus and mats e.g. benches, low A-frames and planks, low/mid height agility tables, low bar box. Warm up: Animal walks, change on clap/whistle use pictures. Combine a jump & a walk. Combine standing pin balance, jump, walk, patch balance as a Gymnastic sentence. HRE: How do you know your body is ready to work harder? Main Activity: Apparatus layout. Discuss ways to travel towards, over, along and off apparatus. Use your floor sentence actions to build a sequence (gymnastic sentence) using floor & apparatus. Standing Pin Balance to start, travel towards, along, over apparatus on hands & feet, jump off & land, into a standing pin balance. Observe groups, evaluate, improve – focus on teaching points for traveling with control, jumping in a shape, balancing. Try different shapes of jump to dismount in your sequence – pin, tuck, star. (from Y1 unit 8) Focus on squashy knees and ankles and using arms for momentum & height. Soft Landing on ball of foot. Demonstrate. Move from landing into a patch balance for full stop in gym sentence. Apparatus away. Cool Down: Balances to stretch (pin & star) and relax (tuck). Make a patch balance with pin shape, tuck shape, star shape, tuck shape. Lesson 4:Apparatus Mats only. Warm up: Perform a gymnastic sentence on floor – Cap letter Standing Pin balance, linking actions – jumps, walks, full stop – patch balance hold for 3. Repeat – teaching points as working to improve. Change full stop in sentence to a points-balance – explore number of points in contact with floor (extension) Main activity: Mats out Revise rolls from Y1 unit. Use TOPGYM rolling cards. Focus on SHAPE, pin (log) Teach leading leg, Tuck (side). Introduce new rolls - PIN Dish, and Teddy (Star) Demonstration. How to improve. Build a roll into your gymnastic sentence Travel towards mats using floor space – your sentence – Standing Pin, Travel on feet (jump) or hands and feet, into roll along/across/over mat, patch balance for full stop. Split into halves to observe & demonstrate. Explain what makes a well – controlled roll (extension) Mats away. Cool Down: Balances to stretch (pin & star) and relax (tuck). Make a POINTS balance with pin shape, then PATCH tuck shape, POINTS star shape, PATCH tuck shape. Lesson 5:Apparatus as lesson 3 Warm up: Gymnastic sentences as week 4. HRE: Ready to work harder? Main activity: apparatus out Revise rolls from last week – quick demonstrations & teaching points to improve, use TOPGYM cards. Remember shape. Transfer your sentence with a roll to apparatus. Standing PIN balance to start. Travel hands/feet or feet only towards/along/over. Jump(SHAPE) off soft landing into a roll(SHAPE) away from apparatus then a balance for full stop. Introduce tucked shoulder stand balance (patch) – demonstrate. Try different shapes Star & pin for extension. Try to end your sentence with a shoulder balance full stop. Split into halves to observe & demonstrate. Explain what makes a well–controlled roll and balance(extension). Apparatus away. Cool down: Walk on feet small steps into a points PIN balance. Walk on feet large steps into a points STAR balance. Lesson 6:Double Mats and benches Warm up: Sentences – Standing pin balance to start, travel on feet only (jump & land) into points balance. Use Gym dice to throw for number of points in contact with floor and shape – pin, star, tuck. HRE: What happens to your heartbeat, breathing when you warm-up? Main activity: apparatus out Introduce run into a stretched jump(extension) and half-turn jumps. Use TOPGYM Jumping cards. From a standing pin, run 3 steps into stretched jump, practise controlled landing onto mat. Build into a sequence adding a roll (SHAPE) along/across/over mat, onto feet as smooth as possible, step into a half-turn jump to face mat again into a balance. Practise and refine. More able use a bench to “run” 3 steps along and stretch jump off, roll away, half turn to step back onto bench, run 3 steps along and half-turn jump (SHAPE) off other end. Apparatus away Cool down: Walk on feet small steps into a points PIN balance. Walk on feet large steps into a points STAR balance. Lesson 7:Apparatus as lesson 3 with some double mats. Warm up: Sentences – Standing pin balance to start, travel on feet only (jump & land) into points balance. Use Gym dice to throw for number of points in contact with floor and shape – pin, star, tuck. HRE: What happens to your heartbeat, breathing when you warm-up? Main Activity: Assess & review Perform a sequence (Gymnastic Sentence) with a Standing Pin balance to start, traveling towards, along/over apparatus, jump off, roll away into still balance. Looking for control, stretching, squashy knees & ankles, SHAPES. Remind more able of extension work. Cool down: Walk on feet small steps into a points PIN balance. Walk on feet large steps into a points STAR balance. |
