Great for novices, this reference site provides dictionary-style information on over 70 painters, dating from the Renaissance to the mid 20th century.

A good source of references for research into Moore, with a comprehensive chronology, a number of images and links to further Moore-related sites. It includes excellent information regarding access to examples of his work, including upcoming exhibitions.



Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum
Devoted to the study of historical and contemporary design.
Ansel Adams at 100
Featuring seven of Ansel Adams’s key photographs, this exhibition allows the user to explore the images and stunning locations in-depth.

A good source of images for modern art, along with some relevant essays. Of particular interest is the Kandinsky collection.

Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Imagebase
This is an excellent source of around 70,000 images of fine art and crafts from ancient to modern. A search engine helps negotiate this vast collection.
J Paul Getty Museum
A wealth of material is available for online viewing at this museum. The ‘how we live’ section is particularly interesting, with pictures depicting education and celebrations.

Loads of useful resources for key stage 3 and 4 students. Explore the art history timeline and discover past and present cultures
Leonardo da Vinci at the Science Museum
Exploring linear perspective is one of the activities at this site covering the life and works of Leonardo da Vinci, artist and scientist.

A superb site whose extensive collection of images may be accessed by period, sculptor or location. The periods covered are high-medieval to modern (up to the 1960s).
SILS Art Image Browser
A huge number of images are presented on this database of art, architectural and museum objects. Artists are generally represented by several images of their work.

Choose Britain, Modern, Liverpool or St Ives for details of each of the galleries, including exhibitions and events, or browse the collection
National Portrait Gallery
The gallery's collection is represented on the site by over 100 images, from the 17th century to the present day

Investigate the collections at this museum of applied and decorative arts. Included are examples of fashion, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, glass, metalwork, silver, jewellery, furniture, photography and paintings.

World Art Treasures
This is a good site with lots of information and lots of images. The vast slide collection on which it is based features work from a number of major civilisations, such as Egypt, China, Japan, India and Europe.
