Core Curriculum - Maths - Keystages
Numeracy is a proficiency which is developed mainly in mathematics but also in other subjects.
It is more than an ability to do basic arithmetic. It involves developing confidence and
competence with numbers and measures. It requires understanding of the number system, a repertoire of
mathematical techniques, and an inclination and ability to solve quantitative or spatial problems in a range of contexts.
The Numeracy Framework illustrates the intended range and balance of work in mathematics to make sure
that pupils become properly numerate. The teaching programmes meet the requirements of the National Curriculum and cover
all aspects of the programmes of study. It is intended mainly for day-to-day reference by class teachers and has been tested
extensively and successfully in schools of different types and sizes. Its purpose is to help teachers to set appropriately
high expectations for their pupils and understand how pupils should progress. The Framework for teaching mathematics at
Key Stage 3 continues and extends the progression and expectations already established in the the Framework for teaching
mathematics from Reception to Key Stage 2.
