Core Curriculum - ICT

Information and communication technology (ICT) prepares pupils to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly transformed by access to varied and developing technology. Pupils need to use ICT tools to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information responsibly, creatively and with discrimination. They should learn how to employ ICT to enable rapid access to ideas and experiences from a wide range of people, communities and cultures. Increased capability in the use of ICT can promote initiative and independent learning, with pupils being able to make informed judgements about when and where to use ICT to best effect, and to consider its implications for home and work both now and in the future.

Most technologies present risks as well as benefits. Internet use for work, home, social and leisure activities is expanding in all sectors of society. This brings young people into contact with a wide variety of influences, some of which – as in life generally – may be unsuitable.

It is important that schools, libraries and youth clubs, as well as parents, adopt strategies for the safe and responsible use of the Internet.

To help achieve this, each school needs to write and implement its own Internet Policy.

Pupils’ safety is paramount. The head teacher and governors should plan to revisit the policy regularly and to ensure the issues are understood by all pupils and staff.
