A GUIDE TO STANDARD ASSESSMENT TASKS (SATS)

SATs

SATs were introduced by the Government in 1992. They were intended to provide a benchmark of individual pupil performance in a range of core subjects, English, Mathematics and Science. This collective information is also used to contribute to the judgement made about schools in terms of a school’s overall performance.

SATs are completed at the end of ‘Key Stages’ with average performance as indicated below. At Key Stage 1 the SATs are a combination of teacher assessment and a National test. In all subsequent key stages SATs are by National test only.
